Located between Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens and Regents Park, Paddington is famous for its grand and historic train station and the world famous Paddington Bear. Thanks to its connectivity and proximity to the city's main tourist sites, it has become a hub for international travellers.

Paddington used to be a bit of a lacklustre mix of elegant and cruddy that never quite worked for anyone. The cruddy bits have slowly been replaced by modern stuff which is actually for the most part pretty good. The main area of regeneration is around the canal behind the huge old train station and in the shadow of the A40 overpass. Yes it is a bit sterile with glass tower blocks etc but it's also pretty nice. There are lovely canal boat bars and restaurants like Darcie & May Green and the Cheese Barge. Sure it's bang in central London and so it isn't cheap but it's not that expensive, given where it is, compared to neighbouring locations.

I took the tube to Paddington and walked down to Hyde Park via Bayswater. I have to say I didn't expect it to be all that nice around there. My impression had been that Paddington wasn't all that desirable, as central London locations go. It's pretty good looking, with some pleasant looking cafes and restaurants around. The little terraces tucked away down side streets look very appealing too. No doubt they aren't cheap, but I suspect not as expensive as some other central London locations.
