Blackfriars

An zone 1 spot on the south-western edge of the City financial area, dominated by the huge station which straddles the River Thames and the busy road junction outside the station. However the winding backstreets between the station and St. Paul's hide pubs and restaurants and are interesting to explore.

Located just after the West End going East towards St Paul’s Cathedral is this bustling office district. With a train station conveniently located by Blackfriars bridge providing underground and National Rail services. This is very convenient for commuters accessing both the north and south sides of the bridge. The national rail platform sits right on the bridge which is pretty cool and you get fantastic views of London from the platform. There are loads of eateries around here mainly chains however catering for the office worker so it’s not interesting if you want to visit for the weekend and so it’s a bit quieter.

Given it's location on the river you'd think there might be a bit more to Blackfriars than a station and a huge traffic intersection that dominates this drab central London location. The station, largely built on bridge crossing the Thames, is actually quite impressive. But it's a disappointing place once you step outside. You're immediately confronted with several lanes of traffic heading in various directions. As you stand waiting for the lights to change, with trucks and black cabs crawling past, you see the old Blackfriar pub which gives a flavour of what this area might have been like before it was overdeveloped. On the plus side, it's possible to catch river ferries here, which can be a fun activity. Cycling has also become safer with better lanes put in, following a number of deaths over the years around the Ludgate Circus area.
