I've been looking at a flat to rent in Camberwell, which looks great for my budget. My concern is transport. Do locals use Oval tube station? How does it feel hiking up to that on a daily basis? What about Denmark Hill or Loughborough Junction?

Oval really doesn’t feel that far away, so long as you’re a reasonably active person. Denmark hill is handy too, not just for the city but also to get directly to Shoreditch, etc.

Also there are lots of buses from Elephant and Castle, or you can walk to Oval in about 20 mins
